(Vienna, 29 September 2023) On 7 October 2023, we will once again run for cancer research. Participants, partners and sponsors of this year's 17th Cancer Research Run will use their donations to support further promising research projects aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of cancer at the Medical University of Vienna. Donations from MedUni Vienna's Cancer Research Run have supported over 60 scientific projects on tumour diseases since 2007. The popular charity event will take place on Saturday, 7 October 2023, between 10am and 2pm at the Uni Campus Altes AKH.

At the MedUni Vienna Cancer Research Run, runners can complete as many laps as they like at their own pace on the 1.6-kilometre circuit at the "Altes AKH" University Campus. The option of "distant running" on a freely selectable course, which was created during the Corona period, will also be available in 2023. Registration is online at www.krebsforschungslauf.at for a donation. Those who want to participate spontaneously can also register directly at the event.

Cancer mortality decreases thanks to research
In Austria, about 42,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year; men are affected slightly more often than women. For both sexes, malignant tumours are the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. The most common cancers in Austria are breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Although the number of new cases has been rising for about two decades, cancer mortality is falling. Relative survival five years after diagnosis has increased significantly in recent years: while it was still 54.0 % in the diagnosis period 1992 to 1996, it rose to 60.8 % in the period 2012 to 2016 (source: Statistics Austria 2022).

This positive development is largely due to advances in cancer medicine. With the results of basic research, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are improved and new treatment concepts are made possible.

Donations support innovative research projects
100 per cent of the money raised by MedUni Vienna's Cancer Research Run goes towards research projects run by MedUni Vienna's Cancer Research Initiative. The 14 ongoing projects currently being funded with the donations aim to advance the development of targeted, personalised therapies in the context of precision medicine.
