University Hospital Vienna and MedUni Vienna ranked 20th in the World’s Best Hospitals 2026 ranking

Significant rise in international comparison of the 250 best hospitals worldwide

(Vienna, 25 February 2026) University Hospital Vienna and the university hospitals operated jointly with the Medical University of Vienna have been ranked 20th in the World’s Best Hospitals 2026 ranking, improving their global ranking by seven places. The ranking is compiled on behalf of the US news magazine Newsweek in collaboration with the data provider Statista.

Compared to last year (27th place), University Hospital Vienna/MedUni Vienna has moved up seven places and is now among the top international hospitals listed in the ranking. The result underlines the close integration of patient care, research and teaching at the university location.

"Our University Hospital Vienna was named the 20th best hospital in the world in the Newsweek 2026 ranking published today," says Markus Müller, Rector of MedUni Vienna. "This is a great recognition of the daily achievements of our doctors and staff for the benefit of our patients and the progress of our country, and confirmation of our strategy over the last decade."

"With this best-ever ranking in Newsweek, the extraordinary achievements of University Hospital Vienna are now also visible internationally, and the staff of all professional groups working in our hospital are receiving the appreciation they deserve for their daily work with our patients," says Herwig Wetzlinger, Director of the University Hospital Vienna subsidiary.

Patient care, research and teaching under one roof
At the university hospitals of MedUni Vienna and University Hospital Vienna, patient care, research and teaching are closely linked. The 29 university hospitals, with a total of almost 400 outpatient clinics, are jointly managed by University Hospital Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna. Around 65,000 patients are treated as inpatients each year, while the outpatient clinics and specialist outpatient clinics are visited around 1.2 million times.

Together with the doctors at the Medical University of Vienna, around 3,000 nurses, over 1,000 specialists from medical, therapeutic and diagnostic health professions, and many other employees from various professional groups at University Hospital Vienna, which is part of the Vienna Health Network, provide comprehensive care.

About the ranking
The "World's Best Hospitals" ranking is compiled on behalf of Newsweek in collaboration with Statista. It is based on various data sources, including national medical quality indicators, an international online survey of medical professionals, and the results of patient surveys. In addition, clinics can submit information on the implementation status of PROMs (Patient Reported Outcome Measures). PROMs are standardised, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their own perception of well-being and quality of life.
