(Vienna, 19 June 2026) A new logbook has been developed at the University Dental Clinic Vienna for the 4th year of the dentistry degree programme. It guides students through key practical modules and blocks and is designed to make requirements, assessment criteria and learning progress clearer and more transparent.
Practical training in dentistry requires the integration of theoretical knowledge, manual skills, clinical reasoning and professional procedures. Particularly during the transition to treating patients, it is important that students know what is expected of them, the criteria by which they are assessed and how their practical development is documented.
This is precisely where the new logbook comes in. It serves as a structured support tool in the fourth year of study and assists both students and teaching staff in their day-to-day clinical work. It provides students with clearer guidance on practical exercises, performance requirements and assessment criteria. It also supports teaching staff in providing consistent, transparent and criteria-based feedback.
The logbook was developed by Tannaz Milani, a dentist at the University Dental Clinic Vienna, under the supervision of Anita Holzinger, Director of the Dentistry Curriculum at the Medical University of Vienna, and Andreas Moritz, Head of the University Dental Clinic Vienna. It was implemented in close consultation with the coordinators and teaching staff of the respective modules. The graphic design was carried out by Robert Hütter.
Reflecting a broad practical education
The logbook covers key areas of the fourth year of study, including radiology, radiation protection and diagnostics, cariology, restorative dentistry and endodontics, periodontology and prophylaxis, restorative dentistry and fixed prosthodontics, paediatric dentistry, removable prosthodontics, surgery and orthodontics. It is supplemented by teaching content on patient treatment and on patients with special needs.
The logbook thus reflects the breadth of the practical training and links it to clear criteria for performance assessment. The aim is not only to document individual achievements, but also to provide structured support for the development of competencies throughout the academic year.
Pilot phase in the 2026/27 academic year
The first pilot phase begins in Block Z8 (Surgery) and runs throughout the 2026/27 academic year. An anonymous evaluation is planned to accompany this phase. Feedback from students will be used to further improve the logbook’s clarity, practicality, design and usefulness.
With the new logbook, the Directorate of Dental Medicine at MedUni Vienna, in collaboration with the University Dental Clinic Vienna, is taking a further step towards greater transparency, consistency and fairness in practical dental training.
