(Vienna, 11 March 2026) Harald Teufelsbauer from the Department of General Surgery at MedUni Vienna has been awarded the Ukrainian Order of St. Panteleimon. The award honours individuals who have distinguished themselves through exceptional medical professionalism, outstanding ethical conduct and compassion towards patients. At present, the award stands in particular for personal involvement in Ukraine's struggle for freedom and independence.

Back in 2007, Harald Teufelsbauer and his wife Maryana Teufelsbauer initiated a cooperation between Ternopil Medical University and the Medical University of Vienna. As a result, he was awarded an honorary professorship at Ternopil Medical University. Since the beginning of the war, he has been working with Ukrainian colleagues to provide surgical care to military and civilian war victims as well as vascular patients.

Order of Saint Panteleimon
The Order is considered Ukraine's highest public recognition for outstanding achievements in healthcare. It honours individuals who have distinguished themselves through exceptional professionalism, ethical conduct and compassion towards patients. Currently, the award stands in particular for personal, relevant involvement in Ukraine's struggle for freedom and independence. 
 

Award ceremony in Vienna
The award ceremony took place on 30 November 2025 during a festive mass at the Jesuit Church in Vienna. Harald Teufelsbauer was then honoured at a reception at the Ukrainian Embassy in Vienna. 
Previous recipients of the award include surgeons Nikolai Amosov and Oleksandr Shalimov, Ukrainian church leaders Filaret Denysenko, Volodymyr Sabodan and Ljubomyr Husar, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
