(Vienna, 06 October 2026) “Research makes a difference! Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow.” This is the motto for this year’s Cancer Research Run organised by the Medical University of Vienna. For 20 years now, the Altes AKH university campus has been transformed into a running arena for a good cause on a Saturday in October. One hundred per cent of the donations from participants, partners and sponsors go towards cancer research projects at the Medical University of Vienna. The 20th Cancer Research Run will take place on Saturday, 10 October 2026, between 10 am and 2 pm at the Altes AKH University Campus in Vienna.

At the MedUni Vienna Cancer Research Run, runners can complete as many laps as they like at their own pace on the 1.6-kilometre circuit at the Altes AKH University Campus in Vienna. There is also the option to share and track your run with the community via the Strava group for the Cancer Research Run. Registration takes place online at www.krebsforschungslauf.at in return for a donation. Anyone wishing to take part at short notice can also register directly at the event.

Cancer mortality is falling thanks to research
Although the number of new cancer cases in Austria is rising every year, survival rates are improving at the same time: the relative 5-year survival rate for the diagnosis period 2016 to 2020 stood at 63.7 per cent. (Source: Statistics Austria, 2026) The rising number of people living with and after cancer is therefore also a reflection of the progress made in cancer medicine. This is underpinned by new findings from research, which are leading to better diagnostic and therapeutic methods as well as new treatment and prevention strategies.

Donations support innovative research projects
100 per cent of the funds raised through the MedUni Vienna Cancer Research Run go towards research projects at MedUni Vienna. Since the Cancer Research Run began, more than 66 innovative research projects have been funded with over 2.6 million euros. The grants for the new funding period will be presented on the day of the Cancer Research Run, providing an insight into the innovative research projects that will be supported by donations from the Cancer Research Run in future.
