(Vienna, 09 August 2016) The latest results of the joint MedAT admissions procedure for medical studies in Austria were announced yesterday: 12,160 applicants sat the tests held on 8 July 2016 at the medical universities of Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz and the Medical Faculty of Johannes Kepler University (JKU). The results: 908 women and 712 men (56%/44%) qualified for a total of 1,620 university places.

The detailed breakdown of these university places is as follows:

  • In 2016, MedUni Vienna has 740 student places in total and, in line with the results, 413 (55.8%) of these were awarded to female students and 327 (44.2%) to male students.
  • The 400 student places at the Medical University of Innsbruck were awarded as follows: 224 (56%) to female students and 176 (44%) to male students.

75% of total places available are reserved for students with an Austrian diploma, 20% for students from EU member states and 5% for students from other countries. That is the quota system laid down by the Austrian National Council.

Four years of joint MedAT
This was the fourth time that the admissions procedure was conducted at all medical universities for human medicine (MedAT-H) and dentistry (MedAT-Z) using the same tests, following the development of a uniform process as part of a joint initiative.

For MedAT-H, applicants had to pass the following test modules:

  •     Basic knowledge test for Medical Studies (BMS): checking of previous knowledge from school in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics
  •     Text comprehension test: checking of reading ability and comprehension of texts
  •     Cognitive skills and abilities: this test consists of five groups of exercises (numerical sequences, memory and retentiveness, assembling figures, language proficiency and understanding implications) and covers basic cognitive skills and abilities
  •     Social decision-making: this part of the test, which has been refined this year, checks the priority accorded to different considerations in the decision-making process.

MedAT-Z (entrance exam for dentistry) is largely identical to MedAT-H, except that the sections of the test relating to text comprehension and understanding implications are replaced by tests to determine manual dexterity.
