(Vienna, 08 July 2016) By the end of March 2016, a total of 15,129 applicants had registered for the MedAT joint entrance exam for the medical universities of Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz and the Medical Faculty of the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz. Today (Friday) 12,160 of them took the exam – equating to 80.4%. The results will be announced in the first week of August 2016.

Details of applicants and those who actually took part:
-    At MedUni Vienna, 7,519 people registered for the entrance exam and 6,093 actually took it on Friday.
-    At the Medical University of Innsbruck, a total of 3,626 applicants registered, of whom 2,825 turned up for today's exam.
-    At the Medical University of Graz, 3,178 registrations were received and 2,646 people attended for today’s MedAT.
-    In Linz (Medical Faculty of JKU Linz), 806 people had registered, 596 of whom actually took the exam.

The entrance exam for human medicine (Med-AT-H) is a multi-part written exam and it took place simultaneously with the entrance exam for prospective dentists.

For MedAT-H, applicants had to pass the following test modules:
•    Basic knowledge test for Medical Studies (BMS): checking of existing knowledge from school in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics
•    Text comprehension test: checking of reading ability and comprehension of texts
•    Cognitive skills and abilities: this test consists of five groups of exercises (numerical sequences, memory and retentiveness, assembling figures, language proficiency and understanding implications) and covers basic cognitive skills and abilities
•    Social decision-making: this part of the test, which has been refined this year, checks the priority accorded to various different considerations in the decision-making process.

MedAT-Z (entrance exam for dentistry) is largely identical to MedAT-H, except that the sections relating to text comprehension and recognizing implications are replaced by tests to determine manual dexterity.

1,500 places available at Austrian medical universities, 120 places for human medicine at the Medical Faculty of JKU in Linz
There are a total of 1,620 university places available for human medicine and dentistry for the coming year, 740 of these at the medical University of Vienna, 400 at the Medical University of Innsbruck, 360 at the Medical University of Graz and 120 at the Medical Faculty of JKU Linz. Once again, the quota system laid down by the Austrian National Council applies this year: this requires that 75% of total places available are reserved for students with an Austrian diploma, 20% for students from EU member states and 5% for students from other countries.
