(Vienna, 11 October 2017) Modern technologies and innovations are constantly making dental appointments more patient-friendly. Thanks to laser treatments and 3D scanning, many treatments are now painless and more comfortable than ever before. An Open Day on 20 October will offer the interested public insights into the many different possibilities available within one of the most up-to-date dental hospitals in Europe.

The University Clinic of Dentistry Vienna employs the very latest technologies and many types of dental lasers. "The laser has many advantages over the traditional drill," explains Clinic Director Andreas Moritz, "We use it as an accurate tool, such as a scalpel, for dental surgery and for conventional tooth preparation and it also has an antibacterial effect in root canal and periodontal treatments." Lasers can also help to reduce tooth sensitivity. "Our patients enjoy a painless and quiet treatment, making the laser the ideal instrument for treating children and anxious patients," explains Moritz. The advantages of digital dentistryDigital scans of the teeth using a 3D camera – which takes a few minutes and is painless for patients – opens up huge possibilities in dentistry. For example, it means that implants and orthodontic treatments can be accurately planned and perfectly adapted to the patient using a 3D model. Information about the jawbone and tooth positions is input to create the 3D model. Patients are spared the need for taking impressions and performing manual adjustments in the oral cavity. Through joint research initiatives with industrial partners, the University Clinic of Dentistry has access to the latest generation of 3D printers. "These enable us to make crowns, bridges and braces. Another advantage of 3D planning of treatments," says orthodontist Erwin Jonke of the University Clinic of Dentistry, "is that we can use computer simulation to simulate the action and treatment duration of fixed braces in advance. This is all done on the computer and in the 3D model without any inconvenience to patients." At the open day on 20 October 2017, experts from the University Clinic of Dentistry will offer a look inside one of the most up-to-date dental hospitals in Europe with talks about dental problems in children, orthodontic treatments, gum diseases, tooth loss and implants, among other things. "New developments improve the quality of treatments while making them more comfortable for patients," says Andreas Moritz, "meaning that there is no longer any need to be afraid of going to the dentist's."
