The Josephinum
The Josephinum on Währingerstraße 25 (A1090 Wien) was founded by Emperor Joseph II as a medical and surgical military academy. Designed by Isidor Canevale, it was completed in 1785. It is the most important example of classicist architecture in Vienna and an important testimony to the Enlightenment in Austria. The Josephinum of the MedUni Wien (Medical University of Vienna) is home to the world famous wax model collection, consisting of approximately 1,200 models, which Joseph II commissioned in Florence for the newly established academy: it is also home to the Josephinum Library which features medical writings and publications from the 15th to the 18th centuries, as well as to numerous other collections of the Medizinische Universität Wien (Medical University of Vienna) which document the history of medicine and the great contribution made by the Wiener Schule der Medizin (the Vienna School of Medicine). The Josephinum is the historical gateway to the Medizinische Universität Wien and is still an important place for exchanging information, teaching and research today.
