The minimum monthly salary for this position (Uni-KV, VerwGr. B1b) is currently Euro 2.507,- gross (14x per year) on a part-time basis and may be increased by taking into account relevant previous experience and other salary components related to the specificities of the job.
We are searching for a Senior Scientist with outstanding expertise in bioinformatics and next-generation-sequencing methods relevant to the study of complex microbial communities, with a particular focus on Oxford Nanopore Technologies long read sequencing.
Job Description:
As a Senior Scientist for Bioinformatics, the candidate will contribute to the day-to-day research as well as technical development at the Joint Microbiome Facility of the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna.
- A major responsibility will be to design, implement and update bioinformatics pipelines and customized bioinformatics analyses in the area of microbiome research, with a focus on use of long-read sequencing data in pre-clinical and clinical medical microbiome research, as well as integration of multiple data types
- The facility is located at the campus of the general hospital of Vienna (AKH) as well as the University Biology Building (UV), and working time would be split between the two locations
- The successful applicant will also communicate with other bioinformaticians, laboratory scientists and Facility users and collaborators to manage data curation and analysis for diverse projects, and be involved in the publication of results in international peer-reviewed journals
Profile:
- Successful candidates must have a doctoral degree in bioinformatics, molecular biology, microbiology, or a related discipline, at least 2 years of relevant research experience (international experience is preferred) and a track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals
- A comprehensive knowledge of state-of-the-art methods in bioinformatics is required, including expertise in the following areas:
- Statistical analysis and data visualization
- One or more high-level scripting/programming languages (e.g. Perl, Python, C++, etc.)
- Experience using a computational cluster including job scheduling (e.g. Torque, Slurm, etc.) and maintaining environmental modules
- Experience working with public data repositories including NCBI, ENA and DOE-IMG; The ability to interface through APIs is preferred
- Experience preparing scientific manuscripts and presenting scientific results at international scientific conferences
- A strong background in molecular biology, microbiology and medical microbiome research, and extensive experience with long-read sequencing methods, is preferred
- Good communication skills in English (written and spoken) are mandatory and communication skills in German are preferred
- The ability to work in a team is essential
