Cardiac surgery results
The Children's Heart Center in Vienna places particular emphasis on quality of results and transparency.
Therefore, all operations performed and results are forwarded annually to the European Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (http://www.eactscongenitaldb.org) for analysis. This allows us as well as our parents and referring physicians to compare the quality of the Vienna center with other centers in Europe. As we are convinced that the results of a center should be publicly accessible, we make our annual international comparison available online.
As the spectrum of congenital heart defects is very broad and the operations have different degrees of difficulty, the results are presented in so-called bubble charts. In these charts, the mortality rate at a pediatric heart center is plotted against the degree of difficulty of the operations. At the same time, the results of all other centers are also shown in the same chart, thus enabling a direct comparison with other centers. As these figures are complicated and difficult to understand at first glance, an example of an evaluation is explained in detail below. The more complex the operations, the further to the right and the lower the mortality rate, the further down the circle (bubble) in the graph. You will then find the results for 2018.
