The research infrastructure (RI) landscape in Europe is complex and rapidly growing. Managers within pan-European RI need a thorough understanding of this unique landscape, in addition to excellent, state-of-the-art administrative and management skills. The distributed nature of many RIs requires the ability to manage people and resources in networked organisations and complex interdisciplinary and intercultural environments. Skills such as leadership and team-building, marketing and communication, strategic planning, stakeholder management, project management, human resource management, service quality and management, performance measurement, budgeting and control come to the fore here.

The highest priority is those professionals who are already working in RIs including directors, coordinators, senior project managers, legal representatives, heads of finance, HR and communication. Using the on-course® database and other resources, we will first identify existing course providers and courses meeting the competency requirements. This will enable to identify significant gaps in training which will – in turn – direct us to develop new curricula (e.g Staff exchange visits) to fill the gaps. By designing a flexible, modular programme, RItrain will finally provide a new qualification aimed at manager and leaders of RIs (Executive Masters in Management of Research Infrastructures).
