12 March marks not only the anniversary of the University's foundation, but also the anniversary of the devastating Anschluss of Austria to Germany in 1938. A commemoration ceremony in front of the memorial against forgetting in front of the Rectorate building is a fixed item on the Medical University of Vienna's programme every year.
Rector Markus Müller and representatives of Israel and the Jewish Community spoke at the commemorative event. Senior Cantor Shmuel Barzilai will organised the memorial service.
As a second-generation witness, Richard März talked about two women who were students at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna in March 1938: Gertraud (Traute) Ruth März, née Bleier (1915-1990) and Greta Spanierman-Spielberger (1913-2012).
