(Vienna, 03 May 2023) Harun Fajkovic, Deputy Head of the Department of Urology at MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital, has taken up a professorship in Urological-Oncological Surgery (§99(1)) at MedUni Vienna as of the beginning of May.

In 2011, Harun Fajkovic completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, USA. This experience gave him a broader perspective and helped him to establish himself as an expert in the field of urologic oncology. He joined the University Department of Urology at the Medical University of Vienna in June 2013. Currently, he holds the position of deputy director and senior consultant.

Focus on studies and residency
In addition to his clinical and scientific activities, his special focus is on teaching at the Medical University of Vienna and the training of residents at the Department of Urology. As a lecturer at the Medical University of Vienna, he holds numerous lectures, seminars and workshops for medical students, in which he successfully conveys complex urological topics in an understandable manner. In addition, Harun Fajkovic plays a leading role in the training and continuing education of residents and specialists at the University Department of Urology. His goal is to ensure that young physicians receive a comprehensive and high quality education by passing on theoretical knowledge and practical skills to provide them with a solid foundation for a successful clinical and scientific career in urology. In addition, he strongly supports the use of simulators in surgical training, believing that they provide the opportunity to practice and perfect surgical techniques and procedures, thereby shortening the learning curve, reducing complications, and thus improving the quality and safety of patient care. As teaching and training are particularly close to his heart, in addition to his work at the University Department of Urology, he is also Chairman of the Continuing Education Committee of the Austrian Society of Urology and Andrology. This position enables him not only to be involved in the training of residents at the Medical University of Vienna, but also to promote the transfer of knowledge throughout Austria and to ensure continuous training by organizing regular continuing education events and congresses.

Use of new techniques and technologies in surgery
Operatively, Fajkovic is primarily active in the field of uro-oncology, using minimally invasive, laparoscopic, robotic-assisted and open surgery. He consistently drives the development and application of new techniques and technologies in urology and advocates for their wider use. Equally important to him is the palliative surgical care of patients, which has become increasingly important in recent years, as it makes an important contribution to improving the quality of life of patients with advanced tumors. Harun Fajkovic works in close interdisciplinary cooperation with various disciplines such as gynecology, surgery, oncology, pain therapy, psycho-oncology and palliative medicine to ensure the best possible care for this group of patients.

Focus on gender aspects
Another focus of his work is on gender aspects in urology. In particular, he advocates for the consideration of differences in incidence and outcome, as well as anatomical differences between the sexes in the treatment of uro-oncological diseases in men and women. In doing so, he is concerned not only with optimizing treatment outcomes for male and female patients, but also with promoting equitable care for all patients.

In addition, Harun Fajkovic contributes to gaining new knowledge in the field of urology and improving surgical techniques by sponsoring surgical studies and research projects. As a result, Harun Fajkovic has published numerous studies in the field of urologic oncology and is a sought-after speaker at international conferences and workshops. His goal is to have a positive impact on urology as a medical specialty through his work and ultimately improve the care and quality of life of affected patients.
