(Vienna, 07-07-2023) As an open-access journal of oncology, ESMO Open aims to rapidly disseminate outstanding results from innovative clinical and translational cancer research and to improve the quality of education, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and patient care worldwide. Led by cancer researchers at MedUni Vienna, the journal gained scientific impact in the most recent international rankings.
ESMO Open is published by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), a leading organization focused on advancing clinical practice, research and education in oncology. By publishing high-quality research and expert knowledge, ESMO Open helps foster communication and information sharing among oncologists, cancer researchers and other professionals in cancer care and research.
Since 2016, Christoph Zielinski as Editor-in-Chief and Matthias Preusser and Anna Bergmeister-Berghoff as Deputy Editors-in-Chief have formed the MedUni Vienna leadership team of the international editorial board. "We were given this task because of our standing in the international research community and because of our many years of involvement in various ESMO positions," says Matthias Preusser, Head of the Division of Oncology at MedUni Vienna's Department of Medicine I. As the Journal Citation Report shows, ESMO Open's Impact Factor has risen steadily in recent years and now stands at 7.3, putting ESMO Open in 45th place out of all 241 oncology journals and classifying it as a top journal according to MedUni Vienna criteria. "This is particularly remarkable because most comparable journals are ranked lower this year than the year before," Preusser adds. The Impact Factor (IF) is a measure that indicates the significance of a scientific journal in terms of the citation frequency of its published articles. The IF is published annually by the company Clarivate Analytics in the so-called Journal Citation Report.
