(Vienna, 31-01-2024) Viktoria König, Vera Vorstandlechner and Paul Supper from MedUni Vienna's Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery recently received awards for their work at congresses. Viktoria König received the 1st and Vera Vorstandlechner the 2nd lecture prize at the 40th Surgical Anesthesiology Symposium of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital (N.Y.). Maryana Teufelsbauer, winner of the lecture prize in both previous years, was accepted onto the faculty of the congress this year. Paul Supper won the 1st lecture prize at the 41st annual congress of the German-speaking Association for Burn Treatment.
Viktoria König impressed the audience with her presentation on high-voltage injuries and train surfing among young people. These accidents are often accompanied by particularly serious injury patterns that require extremely complex operations as well as coordinated multidisciplinary treatment. An awareness campaign was also presented, which was launched together with ÖBB due to the high number of accidents caused by train surfing.
Vera Vorstandlechner presented her basic scientific and clinical research on scarring and keloids. Excessive scarring plays a major role in plastic surgery and especially in burns medicine, as it is often painful for patients, itchy and results in a reduced quality of life. Keloids are an extreme form of scarring with pronounced, rapid growth and frequent recurrences. New basic research and treatment algorithms can significantly improve therapy.
The 41st annual conference of the German-speaking Working Group for Burns Medicine took place in Zell am See and was organized by Congress President Christine Radtke from the University Clinic for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Paul Supper was awarded a lecture prize from among numerous outstanding contributions based on audience voting. In the young forum, he dealt with the clinical challenges following high-current injury using a case study. He presented aspects of intensive care medicine, from complex organ damage after electrical injury, the challenge of mobilization in joint contractures and psychological aspects, to rehabilitation. The presentation led to a lively discussion about the multidisciplinary and multiprofessional care required in this clinical picture.
