Shahrokh Shariat appointed Honorary Professor at Al-Ahliyya Amman University

(Amman, 30 April 2025) Shahrokh Shariat, Head of the Department of Urology at MedUni Vienna, has been appointed Honorary Professor by Al-Ahliyya Amman University. The Jordanian university is thus recognising his commitment as part of an academic cooperation programme.

Shahrokh Shariat is involved in an academic cooperation programme between Al-Ahliyya Amman University (AAU) and the Medical University of Vienna. The aim of the cooperation is to pass on medical and scientific expertise to AAU faculty members.

Shariat's influence extends across several faculties and departments:
- At the Faculty of Dentistry, Shariat has been instrumental in building a vibrant student and faculty exchange programme that brings together best practices in clinical education, digital dentistry and academic mentoring in a collaborative learning environment.
- At the Faculty of Nursing and Health Professions, Shariat has worked to prepare highly qualified Jordanian nurses to work effectively in the Austrian healthcare system by supporting the harmonisation of education, certification and practical training to international standards.
- At the Faculty of Pharmacy, Shariat has actively contributed through teaching and collaborative research projects, focussing on the development of novel formulations of anticancer drugs and advanced delivery systems. His efforts are laying the foundation for innovative therapies that have the potential to significantly improve cancer treatment in Jordan and worldwide.

With this honorary professorship, Al-Ahliyya Amman University honours Shahrok Shariat not only as a scientist and educator, but also as a driving force for international progress. Shariat's commitment promoted academic and clinical dialogue between Austria and Jordan and earned him recognition from government circles in both countries.

Al-Ahliyya Amman University was able to strengthen its international position in the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2025.

About the person
Shahrokh Shariat, born in Tehran, is Professor and Head of the Department of Urology and the Comprehensive Cancer Centre at the Medical University of Vienna and the University Hospital Vienna. He is also an associate professor at the Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Charles University in Prague and an honorary professor at the University of Jordan in Amman. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from Carol Davila University in Bucharest, Semmelweis University in Budapest and Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Shariat has published over 2000 scientific papers, holds four patents, is the recipient of numerous national and international awards - including the Matula Award and the Gold Cystoscope - and is an active member of 25 scientific societies. His research focuses in particular on prostate and bladder cancer, with an emphasis on molecular mechanisms, biomarkers, early detection, translational research and outcomes research. In addition to his academic work, he is involved in medical aid organisations for refugees.
