(Vienna, 01 August 2025) Christian Loewe, Head of the Clinical Division of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at the Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image-guided Therapy at MedUni Vienna, has taken up a professorship in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (§ 99 (4)) at the Medical University of Vienna with effect from 1 August 2025.

The particular focus of Christian Loewe's clinical and scientific work lies in the further development of non-invasive cardiovascular radiology for diagnosis and, above all, for the prediction of cardiovascular disease risk. During his many years at the Medical University of Vienna, he first introduced non-invasive MR angiography and later cardiac computed tomography in Vienna, enabling the early implementation of these innovative methods as clinical standards. He is currently investigating as one of the clinical partners the predictive value of CT-based biomarkers in cardiovascular risk assessment in obese individuals as part of an EU project ("AI-POD").

Christian Loewe has always been particularly committed to post-doctoral teaching and the promotion of young radiologists. For many years, he was responsible for the specialist examination in radiology in Austria and for the European Diploma of Cardiovascular Radiology. With "The Cube – unconventional interventional", he established a highly successful low-threshold hands-on activity for radiologists in training to give them the opportunity to gain early contact with interventional radiology at the annual European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in Vienna.  On 2 March 2025, Christian Loewe was appointed Educational and Scientific Director of the European School of Radiology (ESOR). The European School of Radiology, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026, organises and coordinates the ESR's numerous educational activities, which include case-based courses (online and onsite) as well as the organisation and placement of visiting professorships in Europe and internationally, scholarships, fellowships and scientific visits for young radiologists from Europe and around the world at European centres. As co-founder of the Vienna School of Radiology (VISOR), Christian Loewe is co-organiser of the Vienna Radiology Symposium and R3 Imaging, a radiology meeting in Constance that brings together participants from three countries.
