(Vienna, 14 August 2025) From 17 to 22 August 2025, Vienna will become the global centre of immunology: the International Congress of Immunology of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) will bring together leading researchers from around the world. Under the motto "Immunology without borders", the focus will be on new strategies for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a wide range of diseases – from allergies and autoimmune diseases to infectious diseases and cancer. Rudolf Valenta, Professor of Allergology at the Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research at MedUni Vienna and President of the IUIS Congress 2025, emphasises the social significance of immunology.
"Immunological research improves people's lives in the long term. The discovery of monoclonal antibodies has revolutionised di
gnostics and therapy – now it's all about developing further highly effective treatments."
A special focus of his work is on carrier protein-based allergy vaccines, which are already showing promising results in clinical trials. The targeted use of defined allergen fragments in combination with carrier proteins – such as hepatitis B proteins – can not only reduce allergic reactions but also provide additional protective effects. Valenta sees this as a model with great potential for the future: "The structural definition of disease-relevant antigens is the key – not only for personalised allergy therapies, but probably also for future vaccines against infectious diseases and possibly even cancer."
Rudolf Valenta brought the congress to Vienna together with his colleagues Barbara Bohle and Wilfried Ellmeier. Valenta is the congress president, Bohle is vice president and Ellmeier is chair of the scientific programme committee. Around 5,000 international experts are expected to attend to discuss the latest research findings, promote interdisciplinary cooperation and explore innovative ways to combat global health problems.
