(Vienna, 17 December 2025) The Anna Spiegel II research building at the Medical University of Vienna was opened with a pre-Christmas get-together, marking the completion of the first project in the new research area south of the AKH main building.
Following completion of construction in November, users have already moved into the new building. At the opening get-together on 16 December, Rector Markus Müller and AKH Director Herwig Wetzlinger welcomed guests, who then had the opportunity to tour the new research building.
The basic research conducted at the Medical University of Vienna is among the best in the world. In order to maintain this high standard in the long term, the existing Anna Spiegel Research Building has been extended with a modern addition. The new section was built south of the main AKH building (University Hospital Vienna) and is directly connected to the existing research building.
The Anna Spiegel Research Building is home to interdisciplinary basic research with the aim of rapidly transferring new scientific findings into the clinical field. The extension brings together several research departments from various university clinics in one location and equips them with state-of-the-art laboratory and research facilities.
The space freed up in the main AKH building as a result of the relocation will be used to expand outpatient clinics and thus improve patient care. Numerous research groups from MedUni Vienna have already started work in the new premises.
Anna Spiegel was an internationally renowned scientist and pioneer in applied medical chemistry who continued her distinguished research career after emigrating to the USA.
