(Vienna, 17 December 2025) A recent study by the Austrian Patent Office highlights the central role of the Medical University of Vienna as a driver of innovation in the domestic research and technology sector. With 433 patent applications since 2000, MedUni Vienna is one of the three most active universities in the country.
Since 2000, Austrian research institutions have filed a total of 5,644 patents and utility models, based on more than 1,800 inventions. Universities are the driving force behind this: they account for around three quarters of all applications, particularly technical, scientific and medical universities.
With 433 patent applications, the Medical University of Vienna is one of the three most active universities in the country, behind the Vienna University of Technology and Graz University of Technology, and thus makes a significant contribution to Austria's strong position in the life sciences. MedUni Vienna's high level of research and transfer performance is particularly reflected in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technology – the technology fields with the highest number of patents.
The results of the study also show that intellectual property is becoming increasingly important for research institutions and that patents play a central role in translating scientific findings into marketable medical innovations.
The Technology Transfer Office of the Medical University of Vienna supports researchers in protecting and commercialising intellectual property, particularly through patents, licensing and the transfer of innovations into practice. It serves as a central interface between academia and industry, supporting collaborations, spin-offs and the path from invention to application.
