
(Vienna, June 4, 2025) Clemens Aigner, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the world's largest thoracic surgery society.
With nearly 2,000 members from 91 countries, the ESTS is the world's largest professional society dedicated exclusively to thoracic surgery. It was founded in 1993 and aims to optimize quality in all aspects of the field. Through networking, education, knowledge transfer, and accreditation, it promotes excellence in clinical patient care, research, training, and teaching in Europe and worldwide. The ESTS operates the largest thoracic surgery database and has launched a European clinical trials platform. Aigner has been active in the ESTS for many years and, as director, will play a key role in shaping the development of the ESTS in the coming years.
About the person
Clemens Aigner is Professor and Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna. He previously spent several years as University Professor of Thoracic Surgery and Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Endoscopy at the University Medical Center Essen – Ruhrlandklinik in Germany. Aigner has published more than 250 scientific articles and received numerous national and international prizes and awards. He is an active member of numerous scientific societies. His clinical and scientific focus is on surgical thoracic oncology, laryngotracheal surgery, functional thoracic surgery, and lung transplantation.
