
(Vienna, 04 March 2025) Christian Loewe, Head of the Division of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at MedUni Vienna's Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image-guided Therapy, was appointed as the new Educational and Scientific Director of the European School of Radiology (ESOR) at the European Congress of Radiology in Vienna.
The European School of Radiology, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026, plays a central role in organizing and coordinating the educational activities of the European Society of Radiology (ESR). With over 145,000 members, the ESR is one of the largest professional societies worldwide in the medical field. ESOR offers a variety of case-based courses both online and on-site and promotes “Visiting Professorships” in Europe and internationally. In addition, it supports young radiologists from Europe and beyond through scholarships, fellowships and scientific residencies.
The University Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine has been actively involved in the ESOR programs since their inception and was recognized in 2023 as the center that has hosted the second-highest number of scholars and fellows. This award reflects the department's commitment to promoting young talent and providing continuing education in the field of radiology.
Christian Loewe, born in Vienna, habilitated in 2004 and has headed the Clinical Department of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology since 2014. His clinical and scientific focus is on cardiovascular radiology, with a particular emphasis on optimizing training and continuing education. As deputy editor of the ESR journal “Insights Into Imaging”, he contributes to scientific communication in radiology and ensures that current research results are made available to the specialist community.
In the course of his career, Loewe has held numerous positions of responsibility, including directing the Austrian specialist medical examination and the European Diploma of Cardiovascular Radiology. He was chairman of the ECR program committee in 2019 and 2021 and president of the Annual Meeting of the European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology (ESCR) in 2015. He has also been a member of the Executive Council of the ESR since 2022 and was president of the Austrian Radiological Society from 2022 to 2024. Since 2009, Christian Loewe has taken an active role as a speaker and tutor in the European School of Radiology and has been a member of the Steering Committee since 2018.
