(Vienna, 12 March 2025) 125 years ago, an important step was taken at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna, now the Medical University of Vienna: for the first time, women were allowed to study medicine as regular students. Today, women play a decisive role in shaping the image of the Medical University of Vienna, with the number of female students significantly exceeding that of male students. This development is thanks to the commitment and persistence of many courageous women who continue to inspire and pave the way for future generations.
The 125th anniversary of their admission to medical studies is one of the main topics of this year's Medical University of Vienna Day.
Another focus is on a highly topical issue: artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. In two lectures, Ulrike Attenberger and Michael Bronstein will provide exciting insights into the latest developments.
On this day, students will also have a special opportunity: a live operation in the field of plastic surgery to reconstruct the facial nerve will be transmitted directly from the operating theatre to the lecture centre.
A special item on the programme is the hour of remembrance at the ‘Memorial Against Forgetting’ – an important symbol of taking the lessons of the past into the future.
As part of the ‘Life Paths’ series, Arnold Pollak will talk about his life in conversation with Anita Rieder. Arnold Pollak headed the University Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine until 2014 and was a member of several of MedUni Vienna's committees.
All staff, students, graduates and friends are warmly invited to celebrate the university's past and future with a varied programme.
