Medical University of Vienna among the 200 best universities in the world

Leap forward in the prestigious THE World University Ranking

(Vienna, 09-10-2025) The Medical University of Vienna has made a leap forward in the prestigious THE World University Ranking 2026 and is now among the world's top 200 universities, ranking 181st (up from 201-250 last year). This is its best ranking since this non-medical ranking was established.

The University of Oxford ranks first, ahead of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In an Austria-wide comparison, MedUni Vienna ranks second behind the University of Vienna (95th place). A total of 2,191 universities were included in the ranking.

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings are internationally regarded as one of the most important university rankings worldwide. They are based on a broad data set: bibliometric analyses of millions of scientific publications, surveys on academic reputation, and financial and structural data from the universities themselves. The Times Higher Education World University Ranking evaluates research-intensive universities on the basis of 18 indicators, which are divided into five major categories: teaching, research environment, research quality, internationality, and industry and patent engagement. Only universities that can demonstrate a minimum number of publications and are not almost exclusively active in a single subject area are eligible to participate.
