"Pollen and Allergies": new edition of the self-help book from MedUni Vienna and MANZ Verlag focussing on climate change and Covid-19

All News

(Vienna, 28 April 2021) An updated, second edition of the MedUni Vienna self-help book "Pollen and Allergies – Identifying and Alleviating Pollen Allergies", published in 2015 in collaboration with MANZ Verlag, is now available. The new content primarily focusses on the correlation between pollen and allergies and climate change and the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

"The centrepiece of the 2nd edition is dedicated to the hottest topics of our time: global warming, air pollution and the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus – and their impact on pollen allergy sufferers," says author Katharina Bastl from MedUni Vienna's Austrian Pollen Monitoring Service at MedUni Vienna's Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases, who has written the self-help book together with her medical colleague from the Austrian Pollen Monitoring Service, Markus Berger. In the book, they provide an easy-to-understand, scientifically based explanation of everything there currently is to know about the subject and the relationships that exist between pollen and allergies and human interference in the natural world.

However, the second edition of the MedUni Vienna self-help book produced in collaboration with MANZ Verlag also has a new look and offers new and supplementary content. As well as updated information, new illustrations for the profiles of the main plant varieties and completely new European maps make for a scientific and visual upgrade. The European maps are based on quality-checked pollen data from throughout Europe for the last decade, thus providing information about the pollen loads commonly encountered there.

There is also an additional chapter on "What help is available for pollen allergy sufferers?" "Here we explain the paramount importance of reliable pollen information from a scientific source. There is also a checklist to help the layman select reliable information. We also present the new services offered by MedUni Vienna's Pollen Monitoring Service," summarises Katharina Bastl. These include a forecast of the allergy risk (a forecast for the entire day but also for specific times throughout the day) and the Ragweed Finder, which invites anyone interested to help to curb ragweed in Austria, in the spirit of "Citizen Science".

A brief insight into the history of MedUni Vienna's Austrian Pollen Monitoring Service at the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases completes the information about the No. 1 resource for pollen allergy sufferers in Austria.
