Successful kick-off of the Vienna Cachexia Network

On the 24th February 2025, the research network Vi-CaN (“Vienna Cachexia Network”) held its first inaugural regular meeting. More than 50 Vienna-based researchers from different preclinical and clinical fields of research and at different stages of their career met for the first time to launch this new research network which focuses on addressing key questions surrounding the wasting syndrome named ‘cachexia’.
The network aims to accelerate patient-oriented discovery to improve understanding of the syndrome and will seek new solutions to the most pressing problems. To identify issues relevant to patients with cachexia, the network aims to engage and actively involve non-academic stakeholders using transdisciplinary approaches.
During this inaugural meeting, the interdisciplinary group of researchers worked to establish a new research community, gathered expertise, and formulated patient-relevant research questions. These initial findings will be used over the next month to advance the network's vision, gather a broad range of research ideas, and ultimately narrow them down to reflect the lived experience of patients.
Upcoming events will solidify the networks’ efforts and focus on discussing different aspects related to cachexia research and include interactive parts to foster new collaborations and research synergies. To receive all information, please subscribe to the Vi-CaN newsletter.
The next regular Vi-CaN meeting will take place on April 28th 2025 at 3pm on the 8th floor large seminar room of the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Lazarettgasse 14, AKH BT25.3).
