A Data-Driven Approach to Prevention: 20,000 Voices Shaping Public Health in Vienna
To establish the Vienna Prevention Project, 20,000 individuals will be enrolled in the ViPP. The participants will be divided into two groups: one receiving an intensive early detection program (N=10,000) and the other receiving a basic program (equivalent to a health screening, N=10,000). Participants will be phenotypically characterized using modern clinical diagnostic methods from the fields of imaging, laboratory medicine, internal medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology, and neurology/psychiatry at the participating centers. Demographic, anthropometric, lifestyle, occupational health, and work psychology data, as well as other anamnesis and sociodemographic information, will be documented. Biological samples will be collected and stored for a biobank. This biobank will allow for testing a broad range of future hypotheses, some of which may not have been formulated at the time of collection, facilitating international collaborations. The processing and storage of materials, along with the security of associated data, will take place at the MedUni Vienna Biobank. In addition to collecting detailed clinical status data from participants and conducting extensive laboratory and molecular investigations, numerous functional and imaging studies are also planned.
In addition to data collection and quality control, a proactive data management system and integrative analysis are designed as integral components of the Vienna Prevention Project from the outset, enabling the use of the data for the development and validation of new, robust methods for risk assessment, individual prediction, and prevention management. Special emphasis is placed on preparing and utilizing the data to link molecular and clinical changes, fostering a better biological understanding of disease progression, developing personalized prevention strategies, and creating predictive models using Artificial Intelligence and machine learning methods.
