Prof. Yamaoka is professor and chair of the Department of Environmental and Preventive Medicine, Oita University, Japan and professor at the Department of Medicine, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA. He is a renown expert in molecular epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori and found important virulent factors of the pathogen including DupA, and OipA as well as special types of CagA. He has published more than 280 papers (including publications in Nature, Science and Gastroenterology).
