Tracked ultrasound guidance is powerful concept that has been making impact on many minimally invasive procedures. A small number of commercial navigation systems have emerged during the past decade or so, but the potential of computer-assisted ultrasound-guided interventions is yet to be realized. Our goal is to provide an open-source, easily configurable software platform for rapid prototyping and early clinical translation of image-guided intervention systems, particularly with ultrasound imaging. The talk will introduce the SlicerIGT (www.SlicerIGT.org) for prototyping turn-key applications and the underlying Public Library for Ultrasound Toolkit (www.PlusToolkit.org) that provides supporting infrastructure for the application systems. Following a brief outline of structure and functionality, series of use cases will illustrate the power and versatility of the open-source application prototyping platform.
Gabor Fichtinger received the doctoral degree in computer science from the Technical University of Budapest, Budapest, Hungary, in 1990. He is a Professor in the School of Computing, with cross appointments in Surgery, Pathology, Mechanical & Material Engineering, and Electrical & Computer Engineering at Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada, where he directs the Percutaneous Surgery Laboratory (http://perk.cs.queensu.ca). His research specializes on medical imaging and computer-assisted surgery and interventions, primarily for cancer diagnosis and therapy. He holds a Cancer Care Ontario Research Chair in Cancer Imaging, he is the Fellow IEEE and MICCAI; Associate Editor of IEEE TBME, IJCARS and MedIA. http://research.cs.queensu.ca/ ~gabor/
