Abstract
MedAustron is a synchrotron-based accelerator facility for cancer treatment and research
starting both, its clinical operation and research operation, in 2016. The motivation, requirements, specifications, as well as the preparation for the implementation of such a facility in Austria comprising both, a large clinical treatment unit and a research unit for clinical and non-clinical opportunities, was elaborated in detail during the last decades.
Thanks to the financial support of three public authorities (i.e. the republic of Austria with
its ministry for science, the province of Lower Austria, and the town of Wiener Neustadt), outstanding infrastructure (dedicated laboratory space, treatment planning version, dedicated irradiation room, a robotic positioning system, and a X-ray based ring imaging system for image guide ion therapy) could be established for non-clinical research. It comprises. All equipment for non-clinical research offers also excellent training and teaching opportunities for students from various scientific disciplines.
This seminar talk will provide a short historical overview of the MedAustron project since its origin in 1994, its technical realization starting in 2008, and reviews the current R&D activities for image guided ion beam therapy approaches.

Short Bio-Sketch
Dietmar Georg holds a position as Full Professor in Medical Radiation Physics and Oncotechnology at the Department of Radiation Oncology, Medical University of Vienna/General Hospital of Vienna and leads (since 2001) the Division of Medical Radiation Physics, which has about 30 staff members at present being responsible for clinical services, research and development as well as teaching/training.
The main topics of his scientific work cover dose calculation, treatment planning, dosimetry, image guided radiotherapy, multiparametric imaging for radiation oncology, particle therapy, as well as quality assurance and radiation protection. He was project or work-package leader of several EC funded research projects related to ion beam therapy (ENVISION, ULICE, PARTNER, RegIonCo, ...). He is heavily involved in the Austrian Proton- and Ion beam Center MedAustron in Wiener Neustadt since 1999, where his research team has free access to the a research beam-line via a dedicated contract between the Medical University of Vienna, MedAustron and the Austrian Ministry of Science.
