The Center for Medical Biochemistry, the Immunology Research Cluster and SpringerNature are holding a scientific Symposium to mark 80 years of Archives of Virology, the first scientific journal to publish research on virology.

Springer published the first volume of Archives (then with the name “Archiv für die gesamte Virusforschung”) in 1939 in Vienna. The founding editor-in-chief was Robert Doerr, born in 1871 in Técsö in the South-Eastern part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in the Ukraine), professor of hygiene and immunology at the University of Basel from 1919 to 1943. He was also editor of the two volumes of “Handbook of Virology Research” published in 1938 and 1939. The founding editorial board of Archives of Virology comprised of virologists from Europe and from North America.

The symposium will take place in Vienna on Monday, 25th November 2019 in the Van Swieten Saal of the Medical University. In keeping with the original name of the journal, the symposium will cover a broad spectrum of topics in virology with speakers from four continents.
