Martin Andreas takes over Professorship in the subject field Cardiovascular Medicine

(Vienna, 02 October 2023) Martin Andreas, a cardiac surgeon at MedUni Vienna's Department of Cardiac Surgery, has taken up a professorship (§99/4) in the subject field Cardiovascular Medicine with effect from 1 October 2023.

Martin Andreas' work focuses on researching new surgical methods for minimally and micro-invasive cardiac surgery, both in the context of clinical studies and basic research in the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Microinvasive Cardiac Surgery. He also conducts research on regenerative heart valves, such as the Ross operation and decellularised homografts. A special focus is clinical and scientific education and training and international cooperations. This will guarantee clinical care at the highest level.

Martin Andreas studied medicine in Vienna and completed his training in cardiac surgery and vascular surgery. His PhD thesis in vascular biology was entitled "Effect of Heme Oxygenase-1 Induction on Ischemia-Reperfusion-Injury in Skeletal Muscle". Martin Andreas completed an MBA in Health Care Management. He is Managing Senior Physician at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Associate Professor since 2017, and leads the Heart Valve Surgery program and the Cardiac Surgery Hybrid OR. He founded the research group "Applied Research in Cardiac Surgery". Since 2022 he has headed the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Microinvasive Cardiac Surgery at MedUni Vienna.
