Johannes Gojo takes up professorship in Paediatric Neuro-Oncology

(Vienna, 01-09-2023) Johannes Gojo will take up the professorship of Paediatric Neuro-Oncology (§99(1)) at MedUni Vienna on 1 September 2023. The paediatric haemato-oncologist will be taking over as head of the neuro-oncology program at the Department of Neonatology, Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine and Neuropaediatrics at MedUni Vienna's University Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Precision medicine for brain tumours in children and adolescents is one of his main areas of research.

Johannes Gojo is also focusing his work on research into innovative therapies for aggressive brain tumours in children as part of his professorship. "I am particularly interested in translational approaches and possibilities for precision medicine," says the new Professor of Paediatric Neuro-Oncology, who pursues international collaborations at the highest level.

In his new role, Gojo will also be driving forward the establishment of the Pediatric Brain Tumour Center Vienna as an interdisciplinary program at MedUni Vienna (Department of Neurosurgery, Division of Neurochemistry and Neuropathology, Division of Neuroradiology and Musculoskeletal Radiology, Department of Radiation Oncology, Center for Cancer Research) under the umbrella of the Comprehensive Center for Pediatrics and the Comprehensive Cancer Center of MedUni Vienna and University Hospital Vienna. The aim is to provide young patients with the best possible care and to carry out innovative studies to expand the therapeutic options. Johannes Gojo is also focusing on research into new biomarkers ("liquid biopsies") in order to develop better diagnostic procedures for children and adolescents with cancer.

Personal details:
Born in Vorarlberg, he completed his studies in human medicine at the Medical University of Vienna in 2012. This was followed in 2018 by the completion of his doctoral studies in "Clinical Neurosciences" with his dissertation entitled "Molecular Biomarkers in Pediatric Ependymoma". Paediatric neuro-oncology has been Johannes Gojo's professional focus from the beginning of his career. As a specialist in paediatrics and adolescent medicine, he habilitated at MedUni Vienna in 2021 on the topic of "Applying precision medicine to improve diagnoses and treatment of pediatric brain tumours". His training as a specialist in paediatrics and adolescent medicine was followed in 2021 by a degree in paediatric haematology and oncology. The winner of numerous prizes has so far spent research periods in Boston and Heidelberg, and since 2021 he has been a member of the Executive Board of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of MedUni Vienna and University Hospital Vienna in addition to other positions and areas of responsibility.
