(Vienna, 12 April 2024) David D'Andrea, urologist at MedUni Vienna, was presented with the prestigious Hans Marberger Award by the European Society of Urology at its 39th annual congress in Paris. The jury honored a study on two surgical techniques for the removal of bladder tumors.

The European Society of Urology has presented the Hans Marberger Award for the best European publication on minimally invasive surgery in urology every year since 2004. The award is named after Hans Marberger in recognition of his pioneering achievements and contributions to endourology and the development of urological minimally invasive surgical procedures.

The excellent study by David D'Andrea compares two surgical techniques for the removal of bladder tumors in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC): conventional transurethral resection of the bladder (cTURB) and en bloc transurethral resection of the bladder (eTURB). The study shows that eTURB has a better rate of removal of bladder muscle tissue (detrusor muscle) in the pathologic specimen compared to cTURB. In addition, eTURB was associated with a lower incidence of complications such as bladder perforation and the obturator reflex. However, the operative time did not differ significantly between the two techniques.

The results of this study suggest that eTURB may provide a better quality of tissue removal and cause fewer complications than cTURB.
