(Vienna, 18 October 2024) On October 17, significant progress was made on the construction of the Center for Translational Medicine (CTM). The topping-out ceremony marks an important milestone in the construction of one of the most modern research infrastructures at the medical location of Vienna General Hospital and MedUni Vienna.
The CTM covers 26,289 m² and offers space for innovative translational medicine research groups, laboratory space, a biobank and state-of-the-art facilities for bioinformatics and preclinical research. This building represents a bridge between basic research and clinical application and is geared towards the development of new drugs under GMP conditions. “The completion of the bare brickwork marks another milestone on our way to position the University Hospital Vienna as a central driver of medical progress and innovation in Austria. The CTM will play a central role in translational medicine both nationally and internationally,” says Herwig Wetzlinger, Director of the University Hospital AKH Vienna.
“The Center for Translational Medicine will become a central hub for several medical disciplines,” explains Markus Müller, Rector of MedUni Vienna and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Vienna University Hospital. “The aim is to bring new findings from basic research into clinical application as quickly as possible and thus enable patients to benefit from medical innovations as quickly as possible.”
The CTM is an important step for the future of Austria as a medical location. It will create new opportunities for clinical research, teaching and translational patient care while strengthening the international competitiveness of Austrian medicine. The Center for Translational Medicine should be completed by 2025.
