(Krems/Vienna, 15 June 2026) A new thematic volume published by the Austrian Water and Waste Management Association presents key findings from the “Vienna Water Resource Systems 2020+” research collaboration in a practical format. The Medical University of Vienna is involved in long-term research into safe drinking water supply through the Interuniversity Cooperation Centre for Water and Health (ICC Water & Health).
Vienna is internationally regarded as a model city for drinking water supply. To ensure this remains the case even under changing conditions such as climate change, population growth and increasing pressure on resources, the “Vienna Water Resource Systems 2020+” research collaboration is investigating the scientific foundations for a secure drinking water supply in the future.
The collaboration is supported by the Interuniversity Cooperation Centre for Water and Health (ICC Water & Health), a platform of the Vienna University of Technology, the Medical University of Vienna and the Karl Landsteiner Private University, in close cooperation with the City of Vienna – Wiener Wasser. The Medical University of Vienna contributes its expertise at the interface of water quality, health and medical research.
The recently published ÖWAW special issue “Research for Safe Drinking Water” brings together seven peer-reviewed scientific papers and an editorial. The focus is on the impacts of global changes, new technological solutions, regulatory developments, and advances in analytics, modelling and artificial intelligence. The articles are available via Open Access and are aimed in particular at stakeholders from the water sector, public administration and research.
