Run for cancer research! – on 8 October 2016

All News

In Austria, approximately 39,000 people every year are faced with a cancer diagnosis. This means that the number of new cancer cases has doubled over the last 25 years. At the same time, partly thanks to the research conducted at MedUni Vienna, new and effective diagnosis and treatment options have been developed for many types of cancer.

Research makes precision medicine possible
"Over the last decade, research has brought about a massive improvement in the outlook for cancer patients. Previously we were using a sledgehammer to crack a nut; nowadays we analyse tumours from a molecular-biological perspective and give patients drugs with a specifically targeted effect. We are hoping that this precision medicine will bring us further big advances in the near future, because we are not only reliant upon the development of new drugs but, in many cases, we can also use established drugs much more effectively," explains Christoph Zielinski, Head of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital.

"The treatment received by cancer patients in Vienna is amongst the best in the world, as is shown by international comparative studies into the success of treatments. With new findings in cancer research, which is one of the focuses of the Medical University of Vienna, our experts demonstrate time and time again how the money raised by the Cancer Research Run helps us to get new and promising research projects off the ground," explains Markus Müller, Rector of MedUni Vienna, emphasising the importance of cancer research in Vienna.

The money raised by the Cancer Research Run has enabled MedUni Vienna to answer important questions in the field of cancer research over the past few years and has enabled it to start important projects. The run brought in around €134,000 in September 2015.

Run with us on 8 October!
You can take part in the 10th Cancer Research Run, for a good cause, any time between 10:00 and 14:00 hours – it is not really a race in the conventional sense but a charitable run in support of cancer research. Anyone can take part: come to the Old General Hospital (Courtyard 2) on 8 October, collect your start number and lap card for a fee of €20 – and off you go. The circuit is open between 10:00 and 14:00 hours. You can join in at any time, run as many laps as you want, as fast as you want and with whoever you want – and refresh yourself at one of the refreshment points. Many runners from company teams are also taking part, whereby their employers donate an extra €10 for every lap/mile that their employees run.

For €15 you can buy an official Cancer Research running shirt at the ground or in the MedUni Vienna shop (Vienna General Hospital, Level 8B, open Mondays and Thursdays 8:00 – 16:00 hours). And, of course, you can also donate to the Cancer Research Campaign at any time. 100% of all donations will be used to fund cancer research projects. For further information about funded projects:
