The Future of Parenthood – recent developments in reproductive medicine

International symposium addresses legal and ethical implications
All News

(Vienna, 20 November 2018) A symposium being held in the Josephinum addresses the potential of modern reproductive medicine and the associated legal and ethical implications. The 2015 amendment of the Reproductive Medicine Act has changed the situation in Austria. The aim of the international, interdisciplinary symposium being held on 28/29 November 2018 is to create a dialogue between domestic reproductive medicine and international developments and debates.

The Austrian Reproductive Medicine Act was altered significantly by the 2015 amendment. The amendment was intended to address medical and technological possibilities as well as societal changes.
This international, interdisciplinary workshop will take stock and look at these changes in Austria. Have they really brought progress? What will happen now?
Has Carl Djerassis' assertion that we are living in a time where sexuality is becoming increasingly separate from reproduction been actualised?  What does the situation look like in Europe, where each country has different legal provisions for the pressing questions of reproductive medicine? And, ultimately, what are the cornerstones of the international debate about the future of parenthood?

The symposium is being organised by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of MedUni Vienna/Vienna General Hospital, the UNESCO Chair for Bioethics, the Josephinum – Ethics, Collections and History of Medicine of the Medical University of Vienna, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases and the Austrian UNESCO Commission.
