(Vienna, 13 March 2019) On 12 March 2019 the Medical University of Vienna celebrated its first "Tag der Universität" (Day of the University). With a series of events – an official ceremony, the university lecture, panel discussions, lectures, academic celebrations and tributes and a party in the late evening, this day was a huge success for all employees, students, alumni and friends of MedUni Vienna and is to become a regular annual fixture. In addition to the thrilling testimonial lecture given by world-famous radiologist and biomedical engineer Elias Zerhouni, another highlight was the unveiling of MedUni Vienna's new promotional film.
Als medizinische Fakultät der Universität Wien war die MedUni Wien Gründungsmitglied der 1365 gegründeten Alma Mater Rudolphina und schon im Mittelalter eine weithin anerkannte Instanz für Gesundheitsfragen. Als Gründungstag wird der 12. März 1365 geführt.
Die MedUni Wien beging diesen Festtag nun erstmals als „Tag der Universität“, der jährlich ein Fixpunkt für alle MitarbeiterInnen, Studierende, Absolventinnen und Absolventen, Freunde und Unterstützer der MedUni Wien werden soll – in diesem Jahr unter dem Motto „Am Punkt“. Das bezieht sich auf die wichtigsten Trends der Medizin des 21. Jahrhunderts, zum Beispiel Big Data und Präzisionsmedizin. Verschiedene Veranstaltungen und Lectures an diesem Festtag gingen genau auf diese Themen im Detail ein.

In addition, there were tributes to five people who had given outstanding service to MedUni Vienna: Wolfgang Graninger (long-standing Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine, MedUni Vienna/Vienna General Hospital, Josef Smolen (long-standing Head of the Division of Rheumatology, MedUni Vienna/Vienna General Hospital), Angelika Berger (Head of the Division of Neonatology, Intensive Care Medicine and Neuropediatrics, MedUni Vienna/Vienna General Hospital) and Simona Saluzzo (Department of Dermatology) as one of the Researchers of the Month 2018 and Jakob Eichelter (student/Department of Emergency Medicine) for his idea for the "Lifesaver App".
Disco and cabaret, live bands and cocktails
The relaxed ending to the day was marked by the MedUni party for all employees, students, graduates and friends of MedUni Vienna, organised in conjunction with MedUni Vienna Student Union: Live bands, DJs, cocktails, darts, raffles and much more besides. A star turn was MedUni Vienna graduate, paediatric surgeon and cabaret artist Omar Sarsam, who performed extracts from his current cabaret show entitled "Heart Alarm" – with a guarantee of highly scientific fun.
