(Vienna, 21 May 2019) In the matter relating to surgical records at Vienna General Hospital, an out-of-court settlement has been reached between the Medical University of Vienna and the surgeon and former head of the Department of Surgery, Prof. Michael Gnant.
The surgeon is responsible for having his name appear as the main operating surgeon in surgical records, even though he did not perform the operation himself, thereby leaving patients in the dark. The surgeon is therefore barred from any further management function at the Medical University of Vienna.
Since the surgeon in question is also an internationally recognised researcher, the Medical University of Vienna and Prof. Gnant reached an agreement that, over the next few years, he would concentrate on his research activities (for the time being by way of a period of research leave) and would neither engage in routine clinical work nor work as a surgeon at the Medical University of Vienna.
