NIH Director Stephen I. Katz at MedUni Vienna

Stephen I. Katz, M.D., PhD

(Vienna, 18 Feb. 2010) Dr. Stephen I. Katz, one of the most renowned exponents of academic dermatology in the world and Director of the National Institute of Arthritis, Skin and Musculoskeletal Diseases, is coming on the invitation of Univ. Prof. Dr. Georg Stingl as "Professor in Residence" to the Division of Immunology, Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the Department of Dermatology. On Monday 22 February he is presenting a greatly anticipated guest lecture.

In the last four decades Dr. Stephen Ira Katz has made discoveries in research which have influenced and changed the understanding of the structure and function of the skin organ under physiological and pathological conditions. This includes fundamental work on pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapy of blistering skin diseases, on phenotype and function of dendritic cells and on the mechanisms of contact sensitisation and tolerance induction. Research scholarship holders from all over the world, including Austria, were involved in these projects, pushing ahead with them with great motivation and bringing them to a successful conclusion. Most of them have had great careers since returning to their home countries, and have made important contributions to clinical and experimental dermatology.

Dr. Katz is the holder of major prizes and honours. He has several honorary doctorates, including from the Universities of Munich and Budapest, and is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in the USA as well as several other academies of sciences such as the Austrian Academy of Sciences. For many years Steve Katz was President of the International Committee of Dermatology, which is the executive body of the International League of Dermatological Societies, an umbrella organisation of the national dermatological societies from all over the world. More than 10 years ago Dr. Katz was appointed as Director of one of the NIH Institutes, the NIAMS (National Institute of Arthritis, Skin and Musculoskeletal Diseases), which means he has one of the most important positions in terms of scientific and health policy in the USA.

The host Univ. Prof. Dr. Georg Stingl, who worked with Katz back in 1977 as part of a research stay at the National Institutes of Health, expects the visit to have a valuable stimulating effect: "We are pleased to have the opportunity to hear his lectures on dermatological, immunological and scientific policy issues, to discuss current clinical matters and research projects with him, and also to give him a picture of our division, our clinic, the Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital (AKH) as well as Vienna as a scientific location."
