MedUni Vienna greatly improved in the QS University Rankings

(Vienna 8th September 2011) The Medical University of Vienna has improved its position in the global "QS World University Rankings" (formerly Times Higher Education Rankings) in the "Life Science & Medicine" category from 197th place last year to 115th in the rankings just recently published. In the evaluation which rates only medical universities, the MedUni Vienna takes joint 101st place.

"The positive development in the rankings highlights the recognition that the Medical University of Vienna, with its profile in research clusters and clinical focus programmes, has earned worldwide in recent years", says Rector Wolfgang Schütz. Researchers from Vienna take top rankings in the fields of immunology, allergology, infectiology, cancer research, neurosciences and vascular medicine, for example. In transplant medicine, Vienna is one of the biggest and most successful centres, while Europe is regarded as the leader in rheumatology and Vienna "the" centre. Josef Smolen, from the University Department of Internal Medicine III, is the most-cited German-speaking rheumatologist, for example.

Schütz also makes reference to the economic dimension of successful research: "With our scientific successes, our third-party funding has also developed very pleasingly since we gained independence in 2004. But one must not succumb to the fallacy that this could replace the public financing we also urgently need. If the basic funding that underpins independent research is cut, not only will scientific output drop rapidly again, but so too will competitive third-party funding."
