Christian-Doppler Laboratory on Biotechnology of Skin Aging at BOKU and MedUni Vienna

Aim is to understand basic mechanisms of skin aging and how it can be counteracted by e.g. plant extracts.

(Vienna, Oct. 3, 2013) Skin is one of the most important organs of humans. Aging does not only alter the look of skin, but is accompanied by loss of skin functions, leading to age-related skin diseases. Therefore, it is of high importance to understand basic mechanisms of skin aging and how it can be counteracted by e.g. plant extracts. In this regard, recently the establishing of a CD laboratory has been granted. CD laboratories are the most prestigious grants for academia-industry cooperative projects in Austria and are equally funded by company partners and public funds. The main public supporter is the Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth (BMWFJ).

The CD Laboratory  Biotechnology of Skin Aging will be established at the Department of Biotechnology, BOKU and forms a tight cooperation with the Vienna Medical University, Research unit for Biology and Pathobiology of the skin, Department for Dermatology.

Johannes Grillari, VIBT-BOKU, and Florian Gruber, Medical University of Vienna, will together with their teams ask questions like: Which is the influence of skin cell senescence and the senescence associated secretory phenotype on the aging of the skin? Can plant extracts counteract aging of the skin? As company partner, the CD lab is strongly supported by Chanel, who will also conduct complementary research in their facilities.
