(Vienna, 23-04-2016) Several thousands of interested people came to the Long Night of Research at the Medical University of Vienna on 22 April. Accordingly, there was a great run on the more than 50, mostly interactive, stations at the medical research mile of the 9th Vienna district between the MedUni campus AKH Vienna, St. Anna Child Cancer Research and the University Dental Clinic. Particular magnets for the audience were the cardiac valve operation, which was transmitted live to the lecture hall centre of MedUni Vienna at AKH Vienna, and the "bionic reconstruction".
Due to the enormous interest, two further lecture halls had to be opened for the life transmission of the heart operation, which was performed by a team of the clinical division for cardiac surgery of MedUni Vienna. The operation could thus be observed and followed on three huge screens. Previously, hundreds of people had crowded at the lecture hall centre during the recording of two cardiac operations on children.
Brisk attendance - and running for a good cause
Also the "bionic reconstruction" station was well received, where the experts of MedUni Vienna demonstrated to the interested people how to intuitively control and move a prosthesis for the restoration of extremity functions and the high technology behind it.
"Running for a good cause" was the topic for the fundraising for the cancer research projects of MedUni Vienna: the extreme and endurance athlete Andreas Gindlhumer ran on a treadmill from 17:00 to 23:00 h without a break and also enticed many visitors to run a few kilometres on a second treadmill. Previously, cancer research projects were introduced which are co-financed from the takings of the annual cancer research run of MedUni Vienna. On 8 October, this charity run shall be held for the 10th time in the "Old AKH".
MedUni Vienna participated in the Long Night of Research 2016 with a total of 50 stations at seven locations at the "Medical Research Mile".
