The coagulation outpatient clinic at the University Children's Hospital is assigned to Paediatric Cardiology due to its close proximity. In addition to cardiological patients, all patients with coagulation disorders are cared for.
The coagulation outpatient clinic in our department looks after children with blood coagulation disorders

- Clarification of abnormal coagulation findings (before a planned operation) or in the case of an unexplained bleeding tendency.
- Children with congenital haemophilia, such as haemophilia, von Willebrand syndrome or rare coagulation factor deficiencies.
- Children who require "blood thinning therapy" (anticoagulation, e.g. Heparin, Marcoumar©) following a thrombosis (blood clot).
- Children who require preventive anticoagulation, e.g. after heart surgery/catheterisation, Fontan surgery, mechanical heart valves or in the case of congenital disorders.
Coagulation clarification
- In the case of abnormal laboratory findings (e.g. before surgery) with a suspected coagulation disorder
- If there is a family history of bleeding
- If the child has a conspicuous bleeding tendency or bleeding complications following surgery in the past
- If there is a suspected tendency to thrombosis or after a thrombosis
Care for congenital bleeding disorders:
Haemophilia A and B, von Willebrand syndrome, rare coagulation factor deficiency diseases (factor XI, VII, V, X, XIII, fibrinogen deficiency) and thrombotic diseases.
- Information for parents on diagnosis, preparation of a treatment plan together with parents and paediatrician
- Factor therapy if required (on demand) or as prevention (prophylaxis)
- Routine check-ups every 3-6 months
- Installation of special venous accesses (port-a-cath, arterio-venous fistula) and training of parents in the use of venous accesses
- Training of parents and patients for self-administration of the factor
- Inpatient care and factor substitution during operations
- Inhibitor therapy (immune tolerance therapy)
- Physiotherapy, psychological care, support and counselling regarding kindergarten, school, sport, travel
- Haemophilia camps (winter camp, summer camp; link to ÖHG homepage)
- Genetic family examinations (carrier status, prenatal diagnostics) and counselling
