About the program

General Information

Cancer Research is a diverse and multi-disciplinary field of research. The PhD thesis program Clinical and Experimental Oncology aims to encompass all relevant areas of cancer research to provide students with a profound theoretical background in cancer research as well as excellent practical skills. The participating groups are engaged in international research projects in the areas of basic tumor biology as well as translational and clinical oncology.

Admission

The students must find PhD supervisors of the PhD program Clinical and Experimental Oncology N790 who provide PhD projects. The students are exclusively assigned to a project by meeting the requirements in the recruitment/selection procedure. Funding for projects in the PhD program Clinical and Experimental Oncology must not be awarded to the supervisor from a competitive peer review process.

The PhD students matched to projects/supervisors must ask for admission at the Medical University of Vienna. Students must submit the Application for Admission to the PhD Program (UN094) and the Concept of a Doctoral Thesis Project (Dissertationskonzept), the latter signed by the supervisor to the Office of Student Affairs (Studienabteilung) which processes the admission procedure.

Thesis Proposal and Thesis Registration

To ensure that the PhD student conducts a high quality individual project, the Thesis Proposal will be developed with the supervisor and PhD Committee members at the beginning of the project. The Thesis Proposal includes the scientific background, preliminary data, scientific aims, work plan, contingency plan, time plan, and a summary of the relevant literature.

The PhD training is monitored by the PhD committee which consists of the supervisor and 2 members with complementary expertise from inside and outside of the Medical University of Vienna. The PhD committee reviews the Thesis Proposal and controls the experimental progress and training activities of the PhD student. Annual reports of the PhD committee by the use of the Progress Report Meeting of the Doctoral Thesis Committee Form, N094 or N790 must be signed by the committee members and forwarded to the Office of Student Affairs (Studienabteilung).

The PhD students have to sign the Thesis Registration Form ("Dissertationsvereinbarung") which must be approved by the junior/senior supervisor(s), the head of the organizational unit, the members of the PhD committee and the coordinator of the PhD program.

Note that the Thesis Proposal (reviewed by the PhD committee) and the Thesis Registration Form must be submitted for registration within 6 months of the PhD study (admission) to the Office of Student Affairs (Studienabteilung).
