Programme courses

Type of lectures/courses offered in the PhD program “Infection Biology, Treatment and Prevention”:

1. Medical Propaedeutics (6 semester hours, 6 ECTS Credits)

The propaedeutics are a mandatory part of PhD studies at the Medical University of Vienna and provide a necessary medical or molecular biological background for PhD candidates. The selection of courses depends on the undergraduate education and the selected thematic program. Further information is available here: https://www.meduniwien.ac.at/web/en/studies-further-education/phd-doctoral-programmes/phd-programme-un094/structure/

2. Basic Lecture Infection Biology, Treatment and Prevention (2 x 2 semester hours, 4 ECTS Credits)

The Basic Lecture provides an overview over the scope of the PhD program and encompasses all relevant aspects, including definitions of infection, pathogen biology, epidemiology, prevention, disease management, and post-infection disorders. The Basic Lecture is divided in two parts (2 semester hours each): In the first part (always in the winter term), PhD candidates will learn about basic questions of infection biology, pathogen biology, and vector biology. In the second part (always in the summer term), the PhD candidates will be introduced to the fields of hospital and environmental hygiene, epidemiology, infection prevention, treatment, infection models, and post-infection disorders.

3. Journal Clubs and Progress Reports (6 x 2 Semester hours, 18 ECTS Credits)

Journal Clubs are an integrative part of the PhD program and aim at honing the presentation and teaching skills of the PhD candidates. Several journal clubs are organized by the supervisors partaking in the program. Once per year, the PhD candidates have to present their work as a progress report to their respective thesis committee.

4. Elective Courses / Thesis Seminars (4 x 2 Semester hours, 12 ECTS Credits)

The elective courses and/or thesis seminars give deeper insights into the topics presented in the Basic Lecture. They cover state-of-the-art developments and results in their respective fields. It is recommended to choose thesis seminars within but also outside the field of one’s PhD thesis.
