(Vienna, 23 March 2022) The Medical University of Vienna has been awarded the HR Excellence in Research Award by the European Commission. The award is given to research institutions in recognition of their active and systematic application of the principles set out in the "European Charter for Researchers" and the "Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers".

The European Commission issued its "European Charter for Researchers" and "Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers" in 2005. These include a total of 40 principles that outline general guidelines for the roles and responsibilities of both researchers and employers, as well as sponsoring organisations.

The European Charter for Researchers encompasses a set of general principles defining the roles, responsibilities and entitlements of researchers on the one hand and their employers or funding institutions on the other.

The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers is directed at employers and funding organisations and sets out general principles to be followed in the recruitment and employment of researchers.

The purpose of the Charter and Code is to promote the ongoing development of the European Research Area and create an attractive, open and transparent European labour market for researchers.

The "HR Excellence in Research Award" was launched in 2008 to boost compliance with the Charter and the Code. The award is given to institutions that adopt a long-term, systematic strategy for implementing the principles arising from the Charter and Code.

MedUni Vienna declared its support for the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers back in 2009.

The HR Excellence in Research Award is now an outward sign of MedUni Vienna's commitment to the Charter and the Code: following a comprehensive initial analysis by the institution of the extent to which it is implementing the principles from the Charter and Code, experts from the EU Commission conduct an ongoing evaluation to track the continuous development of targeted action plans and their implementation.

The Medical University of Vienna is now one of 8 Austrian institutions which have been awarded the HR Excellence in Research Award.
