(Vienna, 21 May 2021) Thirty-one newly elected members join the ranks of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). In this year's elections, 19 female and 12 male researchers from a wide variety of disciplines within the humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences, as well as mathematical, natural and technical sciences, have been awarded membership of the ÖAW in recognition of their outstanding scientific achievements – including gastroenterologist Michael Trauner and cardiologist Irene Lang from MedUni Vienna.
The new Honorary Member of the Academy is responsible for extraordinary scientific work: native Viennese Christoph Huber has earned himself an excellent international reputation, particularly in the field of cancer research. He also co-founded the German biotech company BioNTech in 2008. Since then, Huber has been a member of the Supervisory Board of the biopharmaceutics manufacturer, which counts the development of a highly effective vaccine against Covid-19 among its achievements.
As well as the Honorary Member of the Academy as a whole, the mathematical and natural sciences division is also welcoming a new Honorary Member: engineering scientist James R. Rice, who works at Harvard. The ÖAW has also elected a further 6 full members, 16 corresponding members and 7 members of the Young Academy.
